The Knitters Underground is the web site for a real store in located in central Pennsylvania, about a half hour from I-80. If you happen to have to drive that road, take a yarn and fiber break at exit 24 (see map).Aside from this web site, we have a free snailmail catalog and price list. We have several special items. We import the complete line of 2-ply "jumper weight" Jamieson & Smith shetland wool yarns (160 colors) for the traditional fair-isles called for in Alice Starmore's FairIsle Knitting and Debby Bliss FairIsle books, and 2-ply lace-weight or cobweb weight for those spectacular Shetland shawls that are being featured in several books (see book section). We also import the complete line of Jamieson & Smith Shetland Shawl patterns, the old-fashioned knitting belts (for power-knitting), with the long pins to be used with them, and the jumper boards for drying or professionally blocking your sweaters. Besides a complete line of fibers, dyes, and wheels for spinning, we carry hand-crafted spindles by Ann Grout, with beautifully balanced pottery whorls decorated with flowers, dragons, sea monsters, Celtic knotwork, and other historically accurate patterns she gleaned from manuscripts, carved monuments, various anthropologic finds, and much more. Ann is a historian, potter, and spinner, and the combination of talents has resulted in the finest set of spindles I've ever used. We also have a limited amount of our own custom-dyed merino roving. These are not in our catalog, but if you are interested in the custom-dyed roving, give us a call. ~ Molly Mahaffy (yarnshop@aol.com) 1-800-693-7242 |
